Abstract
- The article discusses the social art cinema as a moment in the history of British film and television culture in relation to the works of English filmmaker Terence Davies. It explains the contributions made by Christopher Williams to the critical debate surrounding British cinema, including an inquiry into the orthodox critical conflation of social realism. It describes the realism of Davies' films and compares it with the realism of the mainstream British cinema. The article also explores the impact of the advent of postmodernism in the cinema.
