Abstract

The article Vinnie Ream and Sarah Fisher Ames, first women sculptors to produce official images of the martyred U.S. President Abraham Lincoln for the U.S. Capitol. They each created their sculptures for the nation in the short-lived progressive environment of Reconstruction. Reform movements of the era, from abolition to suffrage, propelled women like Ames and Ream into the public arena. Their achievements attracted the attention of women's rights activists.
