Abstract

The article discusses the proposal of a mandatory standard to use flame-resistant fibers in the production of upholstered furniture. The article describes how the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) elected to issue a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPR) that would require manufacturers to utilize smolder- or fire-resistant fabrics to protect the internal material in furniture. The article explains how the rule will not require the use of chemical fire-retardants. Details are offered regarding administrative processes before the proposal is enacted, including an opportunity for the public to offer comments.
