Abstract

Chapter 10 of "The Life of William Ewart Gladstone," Book 2, is presented. It highlights the political career of Gladstone in 1846 in Great Britain. When the Conservative Party split in 1846, Gladstone followed Prime Minister Robert Peel in becoming a Liberal-Conservative. Here, Gladstone was politically isolated, although he held some cabinet posts including chancellor of the exchequer, a position he would ultimately hold three times.
