Abstract

The article presents a report that addresses the challenges of government decentralization in France, which was intended to avoid overlapping responsibilities and improve transparency and accountability in local government finance. It first discusses the importance of local public finances and the main characteristics of the decentralization system adopted by the French government. It then explores several strategies that can help the country achieve successful government decentralization. For France to meet the challenges of decentralization, the author recommends the government to keep pressures on public spending under control, make sub-national governments accountable, and develop a finance information system to ease the evaluation of local government expenditure efficiency.
