Abstract

The article discusses how to from gerunds or verbal nouns. Examples of gerunds include smoking, footing, bronzing, shampooing, pressing, lifting, mobbing and standing. Standing is a quality which British English associates with people or institutions, but certainly with houses or kitchens. Grammatically, the gerund is a verbal noun, therefore its root should be a verb, as in walking or eating.
