Abstract

The author reflects on the necessity for the American public to engage in science issues which have an impact on their lives in order to best thrive in modern society. The author believes it is imperative that people be equipped with enough scientific skills to develop informed opinions about human health and public policy. To do so, she suggests that K-12 schools teach students how to think independently on important issues. She also urges scientists to become opinion leaders and policymakers.
