Abstract

The author considers the British Royal Air Force's loss of a Nimrod MR2 reconnaissance aircraft and 14 lives over Afghanistan in 2006 as a reflection of the operational troubles facing Great Britain's stretched armed forces. He claims that the aircraft had been forced into an overland surveillance role for which it had never been intended. He describes the cause of the crash based on a board of inquiry report. The author also cites the skepticism about aircraft's ability to soldier on until 2012.
