Abstract
- The article explores the Canadian approach to defense and international security. According to the author, the approach has typically reflected two distinct persuasions that have not always coexisted easily. The first is the belief that its own security is inextricably tied to that of Europe. The second leaning has been toward a more independent international role for Canada. He also references the Conservative government's White Paper that lends unequivocal support to alliance commitments of Canada. In addition, the author looks at popular support for an internationalist foreign policy that is reflected quite starkly in the policies of the two opposition parties in the country.
