Abstract

Following the change in regime in Hungary in 1989, there were also great changes in the Hungarian press. The press became free, in both the political and legal senses. Newspaper and magazine publishers were privatized. The number of periodicals issued yearly mushroomed, then declined. There were also large numbers of title changes, caused primarily by political and economic factors. Developments in newspapers, magazines and journals for various audiences are discussed. Technology has also changed the face of periodical publishing in Hungary: the authors estimate that as of 1998, at least 250 online periodicals were being issued in the country.
