Abstract
- The article discusses issues related to the political problems and conflicts experienced by the Republic of Georgia after the collapse of the Soviet Union. According to the author, the Georgian intellectual elite who aimed for democracy and national independence caused political problems to arise in the country. In addition, the differences in opinion regarding the possible impact of democracy and independence on the country among the Georgian citizens resulted to violence and mass killings. Lastly, the author points out some of the features of Georgia's postcommunist politics that led to these conflicts including its disdain for compromise and its lack of interest in solutions to economic problems.
