Abstract
- A good possibility exists that in the foreseeable future law of the sea negotiations will consider specific treaty arrangements affecting the conduct of scientific research at sea. This paper discusses some general policies relevant for such consideration as well as some particular issues including area, vessel, and object coverage, the nature of rights and obligations, a proposed basic principle of non-interference, definition of research, and access to the various ocean regions subject to varying degrees of coastal authority and those beyond.
