Abstract

The article explores the environmental policy in the European Community (EC). According to the author, the introduction of the Single Market Act indicates that it is time to consider the political issues and processes influencing the EC environmental law. The 1957 Treaty of Rome, which is the founding treaty of the European Economic Community, made no reference to environmental policy as a significant part of a common market. The author claims that the EC developed en environmental policy because there was an increased recognition of the political salience and the international dimension of environmental problems.
