Abstract

This article discusses numerical and graphic methods for subdividing daily streamflows during flood events in the Gippsland Lakes area of southeasternAustralia. The authors argue that underestimation of peak flood levels can result in possible design failure. They use the steepness index unit volume flood hydrographic approach to disaggregate daily flood flows into sub-daily flows. This utilizes the instantaneous flood peak and the daily flood hydrograph rising-limb steepness index. They conclude that the model must simulate the event flood volume and the daily flood hydrograph rising-limb steepness index.
