Abstract
- In this chapter, first, we explain the evolution of the Japanese conglomerates, from the prewar zaibatsu to their decartelization in 1946 and to their reconstruction by the U.S. occupation. Thereafter, we outline the industrial organization of Japan and the role of the Japanese state in the domestic economy. Finally, we describe the four main pillars of the keiretsu model, namely, lifetime employment, seniority wages, enterprise unions, and consensual capitalism, before closing the chapter with some secondary aspects of the Japanese economic and social model.
