Abstract

The article discusses the etymology of park gate lodge as a building type in England. It states that the park gate lodge is an experimental design of wealthy patrons and architects applicable for permutations of small house for lowly persons. Sir Robert Walpole rearranged the South Gate village into farmhouse and pyramidal roofed cottages that left the lodges unguarded. The lodges anticipate spatial variety and ornamental excess of the houses of nineteenth and twentieth century suburban bourgeoisie.
