Abstract

The article presents polymer engineering research into the effects of a tert-butylphenylene substituent on the thermal, fluorescent, optical, and structural properties of the poly(p-phenylenevinylene) derivatives. Poly(2-decyloxy-5-(4'-tert-butylphenyl)-1,4-phenylenevinylene (DtBP-PPV) and poly(2-decyloxy-1,4-phenylenevinylene) (DO-PPV) are soluble fluorescent polymers that were prepared by a procedure that bears similarities to the Gilch method. Thermogravimetric analysis, electroluminescence spectroscopies, and deuteron magnetic resonance spectroscopy were used to characterize the polymers.
