Abstract

The article discusses the use of photography to market the "Little Wanzer," a shuttle sewing machine that was manufactured by R. M. Wanzer & Co. of Hamilton, Ontario. The two cartes displayed at the National Photography Collection, Public Archives Canada, are considered the first two photographic business cards in Canada. The first carte allegedly depicts a young girl seated in front of a sewing machine demonstrated that the machine was so easy to use. The second carte allegedly shows a view of the new building of R. M. Wanzer. Considering the positive sale by the machine, it was claimed that these cartes have offered an effective means of communication between manufacturer and market during the 1860s.
