Abstract: The article focuses on a study which assessed whether the m.3243A>G mitochondrial DNA mutation is a suitable screening strategy for patients with deafness and diabetes. Definition of diabetes according to the World Health Organization criteria and the clinical definition of deafness are given. It recommends that patients with the combination of deafness and diabetes be screened for the m.3243A>G mutation. Urine screening is preferred compared to buccal mucosa or blood screening.
