Abstract

The article discusses research collaboration networks, focusing on the characteristics which change as networks evolve and investigating the ways in which changes to ego networks affect corporate performance. A study involving 53 publicly traded biotechnology companies is described, which used data such as co-authorships and patent counts from a 15 year period. The study indicated that networks are not an unmitigated good, as they do have costs, yet they can also have important benefits, especially for smaller companies.
