Questions concerning the constructs the mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) measure is designed to measure are posed. The important works reported in this issue will make a greater contribution to mathematics education if these works are more clearly situated in related theory and research on mathematics teaching and learning including research on the knowledge teachers need to teach effectively.
