The article discusses assistance to youth and children during Germany's reunification as representative of one of the "largest social-psychological field experiments" ever undertaken. The author focuses on two particular problematic developments and speculates on three challenges, including consolidation of the restructured health institutions, dealing with material issues of youth poverty and unemployment, and closing the gap between modernization and social fragmentation.
