The article discusses poverty as depicted and discussed in the German press. The shifting focus of attention in matters of poverty is portrayed for each decade of the 1950s through 1980s. The opening years of the 1990s are presented as they relate to the threatened middle class, child poverty, and social aid reform. Counts, titles, and authors of articles published in the popular German press on various poverty related subjects are appended.
