The article focuses on the various ways in which the Bavarian State Library (BSB) converted its Book Catalog and Alphabetical Catalog (the so-called "Quartkatalog") into a machine-readable form. The advancement of technology in the conversion process is discussed. The modernization of bibliographic retrieval and cataloging systems by linking the catalogs to digital images is explored.
