Abstract
- The article discusses the costs and benefits of implementing stricter Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Standards for vehicle energy consumption in the U.S. According to the author, The Senate passed a bill requiring a 40 percent increase in fuel efficiency and the House of Representatives is debating the issue. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has asked Congress to grant the Secretary of Transportation power to restructure and increase CAFE standards for cars. He argues that the changes are the result of world oil production, refining capacity and prices along with increasing geopolitical influence of authoritarian regimes.
