Abstract
- The article presents U.S. legal developments relative to commercial legislation. In 1977 the U.S. Department of Justice proposed repealing the provisions detailed in the Robinson-Patman Act. The Justice Department contends that the Act reinforces pricing rigidity, introduces price inflexibility, and encourages price discussions among business competitors, which can lead to violations of the Sherman Act. Former U.S. Assistant Attorney General Donald I. Baker proposed new guidelines for the sentencing requirements of violators of federal antitrust laws in 1976. Baker pushed for six-month jail terms for individuals pleading no contest to such charges.
