Abstract

The article discusses criticism of senator Joseph McCarthy by U.S. Secretary of State Dean Acheson. Acheson characterized McCarthyism as a racket and appeared on television to answer questions from the public. Conrad Snow, chairman of the Loyalty Board of the U.S. State Department, also criticized McCarthy. U.S. diplomat John S. Service has written an article claiming that staff members of senator Pat McCarran distorted Service's reports to make him appear disloyal to the U.S.
