Abstract

The article profiles Edmund Berkeley, who played an instrumental role in the founding of the Association for Computing Machinery, one of the principal societies for computer science. Berkeley, an insurance industry methods expert, first became interested in computing while serving as an officer in World War II. After leaving the service he maintained an active liaison with computing facilities, eventually creating the "Eastern Association for Computing Machinery" as an effort to share research between computer scientists in the United States.
