Abstract

The article discusses the lack of consensus about what constitutes child neglect. Existing research and professional groups can't agree on the standards for minimally adequate childcare. Research and statistics show that children of a young parent with no partner or family support or a young parent with learning difficulties is at an increased risk of suffering neglect. It appears that parents with learning difficulties can be taught to care for their children adequately. A study confirmed that parenting skills training can be used to assess and improve basic childcare skills, especially with regard to bathing, but less so with regard to feeding.
