Abstract

The article presents a lecture by Professor F.S.W. Brimblecombe about the needs of young intellectually retarded adults that was delivered before the Royal College of Psychiatrists in February 1984 in Great Britain. Brimblecombe defined the words impairment, disability and handicap and discussed three vital aspects of the lives of mentally handicapped young adults, namely, occupation, housing and extra help. He also illustrates the influences which determine the outcome of the interactions between the agencies which will determine the adult life-style of a handicapped child and the needs and wishes of the individual and his family.
