Abstract

The article presents a study on the 210 suicides committed during the years 1963-1969 in Brighton, England. The incidence of suicides between in England and Wales and those among residents in Brighton were compared. The higher incidence in Brighton compared to national incidence was attributed to the large numbers of elderly persons in a borough where 25.7 percent of population is over the age of 60 as compared with 18 percent for England and Wales. The study indicated that closer liaison and cooperation between general practitioners and local authority mental welfare officers is important to further reduce the incidence of suicide.
