Abstract
- The article documents the Morgenthau Peace Mission of 1917. The U.S. maintained a cordial relationship with Turkey before and even at the early stage of the First World War. This condition, the desire for peace expressed by some Turks, gave reason to the U.S. to consider negotiating a peace treaty with Turkey. U.S. Ambassador Henry Morgenthau proposed to State Secretary Robert Lansing that he go to Switzerland to negotiate a separate peace treaty with Turkey. Lansing presented the idea to U.S. President Woodrow Wilson, who approved Morgenthau's plan on May 21, 1917. U.S. Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour also approved the mission.
