Abstract

The article reports on several issues attending the disposal of electronic equipment. A total of 500 million obsolete computers which will be discarded will form part of the growing solid waste management problem in the US. According to research, the chemical contents of these electronic equipment pose a threat to the environment and has ill effects on human health. Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are present in the mechanism of such electronic equipment that in the event the equipment is disposed in landfills, the probability of contamination is high.
