Abstract

The article focuses on the activity developed for middle school students to recognize the two distinct processes, the random production of variation and the nonrandom aspects of survival and reproduction, in evolution by natural selection. The activity is based on scientific evidence in which many assumptions and alterations have been made to create a model that is expected to facilitate the presentation of the evolutionary process. The activity will serve as introduction on teaching about evolution during a general biology course in the middle school. The activity is expected to help students build their own understanding of how evolution proceeds. Further, the said activity is a contribution to the idea that biology is an effective means of exploring nature and understanding life.
