Discrete optimization: An Austrian view.

The author offers his views on discrete optimization. According to him, the obvious analogies between quadratic assignment problems with a sum objective and quadratic assignment problems with a bottleneck objective led to an investigation on the common mathematical background of both problems. Some of the factors that makes the optimization attractive are the links to other mathematical areas like algebra and numerical analysis, geometry and combinatorics.
