Abstract
- The article discusses mitochondrial membrane permeabilization (MMP) in cell death. Once MMP has been induced, it causes the release of catabolic hydrolases and activators of such enzymes from mitochondria. These catabolic enzymes, as well as the cessation of the mitochondrial bioenergetic and redox functions, lead to cell death. The following are the different cell death pathways: apoptosis, autophagic cell death, necrosis and mitotic catastrophe.
