Abstract

The author proposes that the "brocher of atheisme" referred to in "Groatsworth of witte," is not Niccolo Machiavelli as previously supposed, but more likely to be Thomas Watson. Watson was a playwright and mentor to both Robert Greene and Christopher Marlowe. He spent six months in prison for the violent murder of William Bradley. It is assumed that he, like Greene, died of the plague in London, England in 1592.
