Abstract

The article provides information on Tung Chee-hwa, China's first post-colonial Chief Executive of Hong Kong, who was appointed by the then president of China, Jiang Zemin in 1996. With the coming of Jiang's successor, Hu Jintao, Tung was asked to examine the inadequacies and raise competence in the government. According to the media reports, Tung is to step down as the Chief Executive recently two years prior to the completion of his second term.
