Abstract

A revised observation system for analyzing video tapes of families interacting is described. In this system each communication is interpreted from the perspective of the person initiating it. The observation unit is defined operationally as any behavior which in the judge's opinion reflects one person's attempt to communicate with another. The categories as well as the procedures for transcribing, scoring, and tallying the data are presented. A new method for measuring reliability is discussed. The types of relationship patterns obtained from using this observation system are presented in a longer version of this paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
