Abstract

The article describes the development of the stirling refrigeration cycle by Robert Stirling in 1816, citing how the method has been reversed in a machine for cooling things to very low temperatures. Refrigeration efficiencies of various processes are compared. It is evident that the Philips-Stirling process has superior efficiencies at extremely low temperatures.
