Abstract
- This article reports on the papers presented in conferences in East and West Germany in commemoration of the 450th anniversary of the German Peasants' War of 1524-1526. The anniversary commemoration opened with two diverging interpretations of the Peasants' War. In West Germany the prevailing interpretation defines the Peasants' War as a political revolution of the German peasant estate. In East Germany, following Marxist-Leninist historiography, the Peasants' War is viewed as part and climax of an attempted revolutionary transformation of social and political relations. It is Germany's early bourgeois revolution.
