Abstract

The presence of Rickettsia felis was investigated in three species of pulicid fleas ( Ctenocephalides felis, Ctenocephalides canis and Pulex irritans) collected in 38 locales in Andalusia (Spain) over the period 1999–2004. Amplification of a fragment of OmpB gene was positive in 54.17 % of lots of Ct. felis. The identity of the PCR bands was confirmed as R. felis by sequence data obtained directly from the PCR amplicon. No rickettsia was found in Ct. canis nor P. irritans. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
