Abstract

The article presents an answer to an inquiry on the function of the Scandinavian term "os" in names such as Osborne and Osmund. It is explained that "os" is not a prefix, but the names mentioned are of Norse origin. It can be identified by comparing it with corresponding Scandinavian forms. Osborne is cited as an example which may be translated in Swedish as Åsbjörn or in Norse Ásbeorn. "Os" may signify terms as the strong, the powerful and the divine.
