Abstract
- The article considers Olympism and the claims that it represents universal principles of ethics and looks at challenges made against these claims. First the author points out the variety of contrasting views of Olympism. He then deals with the criticism that Olympism is Eurocentric. Afterwards, he argues against the idea of universal morals. The author wrestles with the tension that occurs between local principles and the global community, using the term "glocalization" coined by Roland Renson which concerns the need for a harmonization to take place in sport. Finally he sets out a list possibilities for developing an ethics of Olympism.
