Abstract

The article highlights the efforts of African leaders to expand the continent's aquaculture. Overall fish production rose from 80,000 tons in 1990 to more than $30,000 tons in 2003. Top aquaculture producers include Egypt, Nigeria and Madagascar. Senegalese Prime Minister Macky Sall stocked three large fish basins near the town of Tivaouane with about 70,000 fingerlings. African leaders launched the NEPAD Action Plan for the Development of African Fisheries and Aquaculture in 2005.
