Abstract

The article reports on the criticism by foreign academics of their countries' engineering programs. Academic and business leaders in China and India consistently say that despite rapid growth in enrollment and graduates, degree holders lack English-language and other business skills needed to work for multinational corporations. India can't take the lead in high-tech production jobs despite the quantity enrolled in higher education, for only the top-tier institutes educate for quality. Tu Shandong, vice president of the East China University of Science and Technology, in Shanghai, says an increasing number of employers are asking "embarrassing questions" about the quality of education.
