Abstract

The article discusses the data quality problems in businesses according to a survey conducted by the Data Warehousing Institute. Data quality problems across industries are getting worse and merit corrective attention. According to the survey, customer data and product data are especially susceptible to quality problems. Origins for data quality problems are also identified, including inconsistency in data definition and data entry by employees and customers. The respondents reported several benefits of high-quality data, such as greater confidence in analytic systems and reduction of time spent on reconciling data. A large percentage of respondents also believed that by investing in a data quality initiative, a positive return on investment can be achieved.
