Abstract
- Homo- and heteroleptic N-arylsalicylaldiminate derivatives of Ti<superscript>IV</superscript> and Zr<superscript>IV</superscript> of the type, MX<subscript>4−x</subscript>(OC<subscript>6</subscript>H<subscript>4</subscript>CH=NAr)<subscript>x</subscript> (X = OPr<superscript>i</superscript>, x = 2,3; X = Cl, x = 1,2,3,4; Ar = C<subscript>6</subscript>H<subscript>3</subscript>Me<subscript>2</subscript>-2,6, C<subscript>6</subscript>H<subscript>3</subscript>Et<subscript>2</subscript>-2,6) have been prepared by reactions in the desired molar ratios of: (i) Ti(OPr<superscript>i</superscript>)<subscript>4</subscript>/Zr(OPr<superscript>i</superscript>)<subscript>4</subscript>·Pr<superscript>i</superscript>OH with N-arylsalicylaldimines in benzene, and (ii) MCl<subscript>4</subscript> (M = Ti, Zr) with Me<subscript>3</subscript>SiOC<subscript>6</subscript>H<subscript>4</subscript>CH=NAr or HOC<subscript>6</subscript>H<subscript>4</subscript>CH=NAr in the presence of Et<subscript>3</subscript>N as a base or the potassium salt of N-arylsalicylaldimines in benzene. The three homoleptic derivatives of Cr<superscript>III</superscript>, Cr(OC<subscript>6</subscript>H<subscript>4</subscript>CH=NAr)<subscript>3</subscript> (Ar = C<subscript>6</subscript>H<subscript>2</subscript>Me<subscript>3</subscript>-2,4,6, C<subscript>6</subscript>H<subscript>3</subscript>Et<subscript>2</subscript>-2,6, C<subscript>6</subscript>H<subscript>3</subscript>Pr<superscript>i</superscript><subscript>2</subscript>-2,6) have also been prepared by salt-elimination. All of these new derivatives have been characterized by elemental analyses, spectroscopic [i.r., <superscript>1</superscript>H and <superscript>13</superscript>C-n.m.r. (Ti and Zr complexes), and electronic (for Cr complexes)] studies, as well as molecular weight measurements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
