Abstract

The article cites a study conducted at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, concerning the variation of effect of the arbitrary and well-formed coding system to short term memory. Several experts have contended that language is a form of coding scheme that is consisting of different categories and rules for joining them together to form a linguistic system. The researchers made use of 16 bilingual persons that are fluent in both English and French. Result of the study yielded that there is indeed a significant distinction in terms of effect on the use of arbitrary or linguistically mixed lists.
