Abstract

The article examines representation and consultation on health and safety in industries that use chemicals in Great Britain, specifically after the 1977 Safety Representatives and Safety Committees regulations which gave unions the right to appoint health and safety representatives. An analysis of five companies found that joint arrangements between union representatives and safety professionals resulted in better safety outcomes. Additionally, there is a relation between management consultation on general issues and issues of health and safety.
